A White Shroud of Cowardice White hoods. Fire. Hatred. Lynching. A faceless army has been quietly growing in the heart of the United States of America. The KKK, or Ku Klux Klan is often known for its violent racist attacks on others, but what is often unbeknownst is that the Ku Klux Klan has been reincarnated three times, each with a slightly different goal in mind. The first Klan was primarily focused on race, targeting black political movements, and undermining black civil rights however, something different occurred during the conception of the second Klan. The second Klan, while also racially motivated, also gained a newfound hatred. It developed the need to spread its corrupted Protestant beliefs to others, and persecute any conflicting religions, especially Roman Catholics. They were an army bred with a hatred and prejudice for all things that did not meet its twisted Protestant beliefs or share the same skin color as it. The Ku Klux Klan is notorious for its persecution of Afr ican Americans in the south, but their corrupted protestant belief system is what allows them to justify their acts of violence as cleansing and protection of their race and religion. Have you ever seen someone get pushed around or treated like they werenââ¬â¢t important? It is time to take a stand! When someone is bullying you, they are using their strength to influence or intimidate you or someone else to do what they want to be done. They are this way to people that seem smaller and weaker to them. While some believe that bullying makes a person stronger, it actually damages the victim which can lead to a lowered self-esteem and suicidal thinking. Bullying is bad for everyone whether you are old or young. It has long term effects for the rest of this person s life. There are different types of bullying. This year, Iââ¬â¢m taking a wonderful English literature seminar. The teacher is brilliant, the works are classic, and the 18 students are close, many of us friends since elementary school. Two girls ââ¬â good friends of mine ââ¬â led the seminar on Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues by James Baldwin. It tells the story of two opposite brothers ââ¬â Sonny, a wild, talented musician and heroin addict, and the unnamed narrator, a pensive math teacher who lives a life of monotony. While the narrator seeks assimilation into the white culture, Sonny rejects white society and instead embraces his blues music. Yet each fears an aspect of their lifestyle: after being put in jail for heroin possession, Sonny writes that he ended up incarcerated because he was ââ¬Å"afraid of somethingâ⬠¦and you know I have never been very strong in the head.â⬠He is afraid of hurting others, of letting down his family. But the narrator, in his own way, is afraid as well. When we were done, we folded our papers and dropped them into a gray knit hat. Next, the girls had the students draw a slip ââ¬â not their own ââ¬â read it aloud, and tell the class why this might be worthy of fear. It started slow. Juliette ââ¬â organized, friendly, and athletic ââ¬â read the first: getting hurt. ââ¬Å"Maybe,â⬠she began, ââ¬Å"they are afraid of being hurt in a relationship.â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you th ink theyââ¬â¢ve been hurt before?â⬠our teacher asked. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠said Juliette. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s more rational to be afraid of things that have happened to you.â⬠We continued drawing. Such a distinctly worded fear should have made everyone in the room turn to one individual, but instead, eyes read eyes to see if someone would fess up in their body language. Success. A 9-5 job. The activity called for the drawing of three fears, but we did nearly a dozen before the bell rang. Just before it did, however, I raised my hand. ââ¬Å"Can we keep the fears?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"Not our own, but someone elseââ¬â¢s?â⬠Others chimed in agreement. Sarah ââ¬â outgoing and sensitive ââ¬â suggested that we leave the secrets on the table in the front. As we filed out, weââ¬â¢d each take someone elseââ¬â¢s fear. As I packed away my binder and pens, I heard my fri end Carrie ââ¬â sweet, gullible and a procrastinator ââ¬â behind me. ââ¬Å"Anna,â⬠she said to me, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll protect you.â⬠I saw her clutching a slip ââ¬â my fear: I am afraid of getting too close to people, because then thereââ¬â¢s more at stake and more to lose. It was a deviation from my usual optimism, so it took me a moment to figure out how Carrie had known it was mine. Once I did, though, it was obvious: my handwriting. How ironic that something on the surface ââ¬â the way I looped my lââ¬â¢s and dotted my iââ¬â¢s ââ¬â was what exposed something I had hidden for so long. For an instant, I was mad at Carrie for making me feel so vulnerable. I had planned to take a classmateââ¬â¢s fear without guessing whose it was, and had assumed the same courtesy would be given to me. But the anger subsided, and I felt just what Carrie had promised ââ¬â protected. I was one of the last students out of the room, and only a handful of f ears were still on the table. I took one without looking and hurried to my next class. It was not until much later that I even unfolded my slip. Once I did, though, I put it into my wallet. In the same way that we all have different fears, we all protected our classmates differently. Iââ¬â¢m sure Carrie did not keep my fear with her as long as I did, at least not in the literal sense that I did. We had made ourselves so vulnerable by putting our fears onto paper and then exchanging them, and perhaps that was the one thing we were supposed to fear the most. Truthfully, though, that was the most comforting part. It was a silent, undeclared plea for protection. And it was answered. I know that, in the same way that we all have the same fears, everyone sheltered theirs ââ¬â both the one they had written and the one they had taken. To this day, I carry in my wallet a slip of paper, not bigger than my palm, with a single word on it. Some of the secrets were long, some were short. But there was an undeniable overlap, because, in the end, we all fear the same things. And thatââ¬â¢s what makes it so easy to protect each other, even when we are ripping off our armor and exposing our weak spots. In the end, we all protect each other because we all need protection. Our empathy for each other is the strongest component of the human race, and always will be. Whenever I doubt this, I peel the slip of paper from beside my driverââ¬â¢s license, unfold it, and remind myself to protect. We are, in the end, afraid of only one thing. As my anonymous classmate wrote, so eloquently and so simply: failure.

Paddy Clarke Essays - Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, Roddy Doyle, Literature
Paddy Clarke 'Paddy Clarke, Ha Ha Ha' has no authorial presence at all. Yet the reader gains a richer understanding of Paddy's situation than he, or any ten year old child, could ever have. How does Roddy Doyle achieve this with regard to Paddy's parent's break up? One of the first and most relevant passages in the book is when Patrick wakes up and hears the television and from that knows that his parents are still awake. He stays on the stairs and listens to 'Ma' and 'Da' arguing in the kitchen. We can tell that he doesn't want to believe that there is any serious trouble by the fact that as soon as it stops he 'realises' that it wasn't anything to worry about and goes back to bed. Another event leading up to Paddy's parent's break up is when Ma decides that it is time they went out for a family outing. However, as it was raining they had to take the car and drive to a place that was close enough to walk but the weather wouldn't allow them to. The family has a picnic in the car but, oblivious to Paddy and his brother, his parents are having another disagreement. Patrick hears his mother say something but think that his father hears her. He doesn't realise that 'Da' is ignoring her. When 'Ma' leaves the car Paddy and his brother assume that she has gone for ice creams but she gets back in because "It was too wet for Cathy". Patrick knows that something had happened but didn't know what. On several occasions the subject is changed to avoid the children being subjected to the tension between 'Ma' and 'Da'. In one instance Paddy walks in from school and into an argument. This makes him more aware of the problems, his father then asks him about school to change the conversation. From this passage I have noticed that Patrick seems to view things as black and white, not in the literal sense but as straight forward and short term. He doesn't realise that things go deeper or that he has a false sense of control. Another of the most important pieces of this book is when Paddy is sitting on the stairs listening to his parents arguing and he is rocking back and forth. This shows that the tension between his parents is affecting him more than anyone thinks. The 'rocking' action can be described as tension deficit, which can be caused by loneliness or attention seeking. In Roddy Doyle's novel, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, young Patrick is so distressed over his parents' fighting with each other that he stays up all night trying to prevent their quarrels. Like many children whose parents break up, Patrick thinks he is somehow responsible, but he does not understand what is going wrong or why. He loves both of them, especially his mother. He acts out his anxiety over the discord between his parents by often getting into fights and by being mean and abusive to his younger brother. For awhile he thinks that if he were to run away, his parents would stay together. He thinks of questions to ask them so they will talk to him and not fight with each other. But his father leaves for good, and Paddy is left with the teasing chant of his schoolmates: "Paddy Clarke, Paddy Clarke, Lost his Da, Ha, Ha, Ha."
